Hi Bill,

Here is a very brief summary of the events at our Class Get Together Kingston weekend, 25 to 27 Sep 2015.

The thirty one Class members listed below were at the dinner Friday evening at the Donald Gordon Conference Centre. I acted as MC in the absence of Al Roberts who was prevented from travelling because of intense pain in his upper arm and shoulder caused by a pinched nerve. The mike passing was very well received. Cindy Allan, Jay Kennedy’s widow was also at the dinner. A special guest was Jim Tremain, Class of 1954, and his wife-to-be, Joan Miller, widow of Dusty Miller. The luncheon on Saturday at the DGCC was also well attended. Food at the CCGC was excellent. The 13 shown with an asterisk (*) were also on parade for the Memorial Service at the Arch on Sunday morning.
The weekend’s weather was absolutely outstanding – “the best ever”, several were heard to say. Lastly, I would be remiss not to mention our lovely ladies who added so much to the quality of the weekend.

According to Al our next Class event will be a regular 5-year reunion in 2017, our 60th anniversary of graduation. Accommodation has already been booked. (Here is an idea for 2017 – Invite each classmate who is not going to attend to provide a short message to his classmates for reading out at the Friday evening Class Dinner. This would be done in conjunction with the tradition of passing the mike after dinner.)

It must be a bad one for AKR to miss the weekend.
Eleanor has had experience with that subject. She learned not to look down and then twist her head suddenly to the right. That appeared to be the trigger and the resulting pain could be quite severe.
I assume that you will ably MC the proceedings. Please encourage attendees to email me their best shots for the web. I’m behind with the web site at the moment because of a problem with Microsoft updates on both of my computers. My operating systems are complicated because I continue to operate a “virtual XP” within W7. At the moment I can’t access my email addresses. I expect to have my laptop back from the “hospital” later this week, at which point I’ll hand over the desk top.
I regret missing the weekend show but Eleanor is scheduled for the knife on Thursday. The hospital stay will just be overnight but a full recovery with take several weeks. Fortunately we live in Berwick so her meals will be sent to our suite for as long as necessary and there’s a Care unit for advice.

Wellsman, Dean (Joan)

Totals to date: 38 classmates + 1 widow + 34 significant others = 73 for Friday evening dinner – and still counting. Why not aim for 80!

It seems to me that we’re going to have a wonderful time describing all our individual ailments to any one who will listen! Over and above that – and much more important – we’ll be seeing long-time friends and colleagues with whom we can always pick up the conversation from where we left off at the last reunion.

For those of you whose mental degradation has reached such a state that you don’t know what the above details are all about, the Get-Together will be held in Kingston during the regular RMC Ex-Cadet Weekend 24-27 September 2015 and will follow the same program as in past years. This will allow us to attend Club reunion functions of our choice as well as to enjoy the stories and lies of our classmates at a supper Friday night, and a buffet lunch Saturday, for which rooms have already been reserved. If we want to do something together on Saturday evening (e.g., reserve tables or a room in a restaurant in town), that can be planned later.

I have not enrolled us, as a class, in any of the Reunion Weekend activities in which 5-year reunion classes normally participate. In fact, Panet House is not yet aware that we will be present that weekend, although I will inform Gerry Stowe, Old Brigade Adjutant, that we will be around under the radar. If, however, anyone plans to attend any of the functions at the College, he should wear his Old Brigade beret while on the grounds. I, for example, plan to attend the AGM of the Club Saturday morning (early!) and will probably watch at least part of the First Year Badging Parade afterwards, but will leave in good time to get back to the DGCC for our Class lunch together. All going well, I also plan to join the March to the Arch on Sunday morning.

Reservations are still being accepted at the Donald Gordon Conference Centre, 421 Union Street, Kingston ON K7L 3N6 using one of the following coordinates:

Phone: 613-533-2221

Fax: 613-533-2915

Email: dgc@queensu.ca

In any and all correspondence quote “RMC Class of 57”.

Cynthia and I are leaving for Nova Scotia in a few days and will not return until mid-September. At that time there will be one last update and provision of additional details, as required. If you have any queries in the meantime, please contact Don Coulter at coulter.dm@sympatico.ca or 613-542-9998.

I wish you all a fine remainder of the summer and am looking forward very much to seeing many of you at the end of September.

Al

Gentlemen and Ladies,

Now that winter seems to be drawing to an end, it is time to look forward to summer and fall activities. Hopefully, many of you will have already marked in your agendas our Get-Together during Reunion Weekend at the College in Kingston this coming September (just six months hence) as described in my message to you dated 28 October 2014. If you are planning to come and have not already done so, please book your accommodation. A number of you have already made reservations but, if you haven’t, now is the opportune moment before you get carried away with summer holiday arrangements. You can always cancel later on, if necessary. Once again, here are the details:

I will shortly begin regular updates as to who is planning to attend and what we might like to do on the Saturday evening.

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Queen’s University Donald Gordon Centre where the supper and lunch will be held. Reservations are being accepted as on now at the Donald Gordon Conference Centre, 421 Union Street, Kingston ON K7L 3N6 using one of the following coordinates:

Phone: 613-533-2221

Fax: 613-533-2915

Email: dgc@queensu.ca

In any and all correspondence quote “RMC Class of 57”

Please mark the dates in your 2015 Agenda and, as early as possible, if you plan to attend, make a reservation, if required.

Looking forward to seeing a good many of you in attendance. It looks like we’ll be having a grand time together, as we always do!

AKR: 28 Oct 14

As you all know, Bill Hughes conducted a survey during the summer months concerning our collective preference as to holding a reunion in 2015 (i.e., just three years after the last one) or following the usual five-year cycle and waiting until 2017. The ongoing results of this survey were transmitted to you by Bill on several occasions with the latest one dated 28 August. In that message the results were 18 preferring 2015, 19 preferring 2017 and four others in favour of both. Many thanks go to Bill for conducting this survey in his usual efficient and effective way.

Since Bill’s 28 August count there have been several other classmates who have responded or been contacted. Of the 85 classmates currently on the mailing list, some 45 have responded in one way or another to the survey along with five others who have not yet decided or simply cannot attend either year. As of this date, 27 classmates have indicated that would like to have a reunion next year with 18 preferring 2017. It is not inconceivable that some of those voting for 2017 might come in 2015 anyway. Three years ago at our last reunion there were 47 classmates (most with spouses or partners) plus three class widows in attendance at our Friday evening dinner together, for a total of 87. The attached table shows how the voting has gone as of this date. If you can’t open it, go to the class web site where it is posted.

It seems to me that 27 interested classmates is a significant number, about half compared to 2012. Considering that our total numbers are dwindling at an alarming rate (we’ve lost George Logan, Bill Causier, Dave Stothers and Don Goodwin over just the last few months) sooner would be better than later. I have, therefore, asked Don Coulter, our man in Kingston, to make the necessary arrangements for a reunion next year for an estimated attendance of about 50-60 people all up (see details below). We can adjust the arrangements to meet an increased number of attendees until nearly the last moment.

There`s no reason why we wouldn't also celebrate our 60th Anniversary of Graduation in the normal way in 2017.

 2015 GET-TOGETHER AND RR/CMR CELEBRATION

Since this will be an off-year reunion, it has been suggested by Don that we give it a different name, as indicated in the heading to this section. Further, 2015 marks the 60th anniversary of graduation for the Royal Roads Military ollege (RR) and Collège militaire royal du Canada (CMR) classes of 1955 (i.e., the classes that entered RR in 1953 and CMR in 1952, respectively). Of course, many members of these two classes subsequently came on to Kingston to become integral parts of our RMC Class of 1957. We could, therefore, make our classmates from RR and CMR the focus of attention and have a bit of fun in so doing through the recounting of anecdotes, war stories, escapades, etc as well as collecting photos in advance for display on the class website. In fact, if we could get written accounts of the aforementioned anecdotes, war stories, escapades, etc, they too could be displayed on the web site. The get-together will be held in Kingston during the regular RMC Ex-Cadet Weekend September 24-27 2015 and will follow the same program as in past years which allowed us to attend the Ex-Cadet functions of our choice as well as enjoying the stories and lies of our classmates at a supper Friday night, and a buffet lunch Saturday, for which rooms have already been reserved. If we want to do something together (e.g., reserve tables or a room in a restaurant in town) on Saturday evening, that can be planned later.

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Queen’s University Donald Gordon Centre where the supper and lunch will be held. Reservations are being accepted as on now. The details are:

Looking forward to seeing a good many of you next fall.

Good decision! Just because some said they preferred 2017 did not mean that they would not attend a reunion in 2015. I expect we will have a very good turnout in 2015.
